i’ve been a proffesional in the “video” field for awhile. this is stuff i learned when i could be trusted to do little else then order lunch, and copy tapes.. video shoots at 30i. thats 30 frames a second “interlaced”. (and its actually 29.976 FPS, give or take a drop frame.. but thats not important here).
HD mini dv shoots at 60i.. still interlaced. the magic we’re looking for is 60p. or 30p, etc. (i = interlanced, p = progressive, or “solid frames”)
24 frame DV is actually 30 FPS. with a alternating field pattern. like.. WSSWW. anyways.
when you shoot video, and edit video. you have fields. if it goes back to tape or DVD. this is not a problem. if it goes to the web.. it is. you HAVE to de-interlace you video. or you get all those little ass lines all over the place.
heres a screen grab of trailer #4 from the new powell video.. powell!!
see those weird lines? interlacing. if i was at a studio working now. we’d be making so much fun of this.
basicly you can use a tool like After Effects to de-interlace you footage. also there is a ton of freeware out there to do this. you take your footage.. import it. and tell whatever app, to “de-interlance” the footage. maybe you have to tell it to start with an upper field, or lower field, or maybe you need to apply a 2:3 pull down. if your a pro, you can deal with this. if you can see your fields.. your doing it wrong. learn it, it’s embarrasing. here is a great site to read about what interlancing technically is.
